Backend Remote

Senior Backend Engineer, Deals

Remote Full-time

Build the services behind deals, inventory and the enquiries that come back from them.

About the Role

The backend carries deals, the inventory behind them, and the enquiries they generate, across a vendor app, a buyer app and an admin console. It is a systems job with real constraints attached: a wrong availability flag means a shop calls a customer to apologise, and a slow feed means nobody sees a deal on the day it matters. You will be early enough to set how this is built.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design and build the services behind deals, inventory and enquiries.
  • Own the deal lifecycle: posted, active, closed, reposted.
  • Keep availability correct across the vendor app, the buyer app and the deals feed.
  • Build the feed that decides which deals a buyer sees, and why.
  • Set up the observability we need to answer why a deal did not appear, without guessing.
  • Take part in on-call once we open, and run blameless reviews when things break.

What We're Looking For

  • Five or more years building production backend systems.
  • Strong with a typed server language and relational data modelling.
  • You have owned a system where correctness mattered and been on call for it.
  • Comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and revisiting them later.
  • You can explain a technical trade-off to someone who does not write code.

Nice to Have

  • Worked on feeds, marketplaces or anything with a ranking problem in it.
  • Experience with geospatial data and location hierarchies (city, LGA, area).
  • Built something that had to work on patchy mobile connections.

Tech Stack

TypeScript

Services and shared types across the stack.

PostgreSQL

Primary store, including location queries.

Redis

Caching and queues for the deals feed.

AWS

Where it all runs.
